Nancy Cartwright brought her enthusiasm and wisdom with her last month when she came to the Centerville Library to promote The Good Life Award Writing Contest. Cartwright, voice of Bart Simpson from the television program The Simpsons, is originally from Kettering and visits the area often to promote literacy. The Library was thrilled when she agreed to lend her considerable talents to the writing contest.
Long-time patron and Teen Advisory Board member Rachel Kessie (shown with Ms. Cartwright) had the opportunity to interview Ms. Cartwright one-on-one for a DVD shot specifically for the contest. The film, as well as a READ poster featuring Ms. Cartwright, will be sent to local educators in mid-winter as part of a promotional packet for The Good Life Award Writing Contest which is held from March 1 to April 1. Based upon the philosophy of Mrs. Dorothy L. Yeck who believed that Being Good and Doing Good meant Having Fun and Being Happy, the contest carries a $3,000 top prize for a Montgomery County student in grades 7th - 9th whose essay best captures Mrs. Yeck's idea of what it means to lead a good life.
Ms. Cartwright shared her own stories as a member of the Centerville Town Hall Players, the speech team in Kettering, and of her days on the radio, eventually studying under the mentorship of Daws Butler, the voice behind many famous cartoons. One of the best pieces of advice she shared with Rachel was to surround yourself with great people and always have one friend who'll tell you when you're messing up. And, she added, "teens need to stay busy."
When asked for her choice of favorite book so that she could pose for the Good Life READ poster, Ms. Cartwright said that besides the Encyclopedia Brown series, she was a Mrs. Piggle Wiggle fan and then, as she got older, To Kill a Mockingbird became her all-time favorite. Good choices, Nancy!
