Countdown To A Record-Breaking 2009

We're excited to report our patrons have already checked out over 2 million items this year – 2 months earlier than we hit that same mark in 2008!
October 2009: 2,072,728
October 2008: 1,841,274

Total visitors via the front door and website homepage topped the 1 million mark early this year, too.
October 2009: 1,073,381
October 2008:    946,235

Plus, our print and AV checkout numbers continue to post double digit increases over last year’s counts. Too bad we're not the stock market!

Check back again soon to see if we're on target to break all our records this year.

Save Ohio Libraries Part II

There is an important proposal before the Ohio Senate that requires immediate action. This proposal would postpone the final cut in the state income tax. Although this proposal means that Ohioans will not pay any more state income taxes than they did in 2009, it will provide enough money to the state to balance the budget next year.

Cuts in Ohio's budget have already been severe. Public libraries are only one example but, as you know, most libraries have had to cut hours, lay off staff, close branches, reduce materials, and a variety of other measures that have limited your access to important library services. This is also true of local governments that have experienced cuts for police and fire and other essential services. No one has gone unaffected by the state's budget cuts.

Without Senate support of HB 318, more cuts to libraries and other important services are on the way. This bill must pass before the Ohio Senate is scheduled to adjourn on December 16.

If you live in the 6th Senate district (which includes Montgomery County) please E-mail Senator John Husted or find your senator's E-mail address and ask them to support HB 318.

"Book of Kells" Is A World-Wide Hit!

It's been a year since the program series highlighting our limited edition facsimile of The Book of Kells ended, but this rare book continues to make Washington-Centerville Public Library a "destination library." Not only does it draw visitors from Ohio and beyond, but it also generates interest from the World Wide Web!

Our YouTube video Book of Kells: Pages of History was viewed more than 350 in October alone, and has registered over 1600 views this year. Most of those viewers were referred to the video from a link on the Web site of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, home of the original Book of Kells.

Learn more about the Book of Kells at www.wclibrary.info/kells and check out the ornate illuminated pages featured in the library throughout the holiday season!
